Having departed the rock and roll world with his former band, Head of the Herd, multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire, Neu Mannas, has embarked on his own solo musical project: Voldo Blanka.
Moving in an entirely different direction from the blues-rock influences sound of Head of the Herd, Voldo embodies a wholly electronic vibe that sees bass-heavy tracks ignited with spacey synths and powerful beats.
‘Go Your Way’ uniquely begins with a delicate ascending piano line that you just know is going to drop into something completely different. Naturally, it does: listeners are hit with a wall of bass, fuzz and sludge that are juxtaposed beautifully with Blanka’s softly vocoded vocals that float on top of an otherwise dense track.
Experimentation is at the heart of what Voldo does though, with the classical piano intertwining with the seemingly incongruous synth-led genre, displaying Blanka’s affinity for playing around with instrumentation and style. He has even been known to use scrap metal as percussion, as well as messing around with natural sounds such as breathing and rustling, which he electrifies with amplifiers and compressors to fins something like no other.
Fans of Daft Punk should definitely get their ears wrapped around this one.
